Positing the new Japanese security policies in the Middle East and North Africa: The case of the second Abe administration (2012 – 2020)

【講座内容】
The Japanese diplomacy under Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving prime minister in the Japanese political history experienced unprecedented proactive peace diplomacy. Abe’s diplomatic-security legacy is usually discussed in the context of the strengthened Japan-US security treaty, promotion of the layer of free-trade treaties and the pan-Indo Pacific security network with an eye on the rising Chinese presence. However, the consequences of these policies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are still unclear. On the other hand, there are scarce resources in terms of the reverse, the influence of a series of conflicts and turmoil in MENA and its effect on the Japanese diplomatic-security policy under the Abe administration. This presentation tries to sketch the mutual influences by taking the reciprocal analyses on how to have the position of Japan in the region under Abe and how MENA security meltdown positively or negatively affected Japan.
